Yes. It is very much possible but the effort you require depends on various factors.

  1. Location - it is relatively easy if you are working in a tier 2 city like Indore, Pune than tier 1 cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Banglore. Metro cities are too congested and you will end up atleast 1–2 hours daily in travelling (I can vouch for Mumbai, not sure about other cities ). Similarly, your house location from your office also matters. You can dole out twice the money for rent and get a house close to your office. That way you will save couple of hours and can use that for preparation.
  2. Project - Your project and the work pressure in that project is one of the important factors. Whether your project is Development or Production. Do you have night shifts or not? Do you have weekend support or not? Is your project relatively stable? How many team members you have? What is your role in your project (team member, shift lead, team lead etc).
  3. Which exam - Are you trying for SSC, UPSC, EPFO, Railways. Even though all are government exams, each of them requires a different level of preparation altogether.

Ideal scenario would be to be on bench as much as possible and just report to RMG and continue with your preparation. Even if you get allocated, dont get swayed by promises of onsite and bands. Stick to your goal and see if you could find time in between your work to go through your preparation material.
